Summer Manchu Studies Workshop

Learned Elementary Manchu but not sure how to incorporate it into your research? Got a bunch of primary sources in Manchu that you need to transcribe and translate but have been sitting on for too long? Want to explore a specific subfield of Manjuristic literature but never had the time? Or simply hone your reading skills and build on what you learned?

This summer, the Manchu Studies Group (https://www.manchustudiesgroup.org/) is launching a summer study workshop online. Participants will propose their own reading / research plan, share their weekly work progress on an online space (e.g. Slack), and help one another by offering timely and collegial support, suggestions, and feedback. The 6-week session will run June 21-July 30, 2021, culminating in a mini-presentation session via Zoom. The primary goal of this peer-support group is to promote Manchu Studies research and build on the last decades’ widening access to Manchu language learning. Participants must have had elementary Manchu (i.e. the basic grammar – when in doubt, just reach out to us and ask) before joining and be committed to submitting some iterations of this summer’s work for peer review at Saksaha: A Journal of Manchu Studies (https://www.saksaha.org/).

Scholars at all career stages and Manchu proficiency are welcome to apply, but priority will be given to early career researchers and graduate students. Interested applicants should prepare a 2-page short CV and a research statement (2-3pp) that describes

1) how Manchu studies intersect with your research interest;

2) your experience in Manchu language learning so far;

3) what you plan to achieve this summer – be imaginative but also practical!

Send these materials along with any inquiries to Dr. He BIAN at [email protected] by June 11, 2021. Finalists will be notified by June 15, 2021.

We are aiming at a small group of 8-10 participants at the moment. In spring and summer 2022, we hope to host similar research support meetings, so please stay tuned!
